Feb 03, 2017 · One would have a big problem stuffing a large rifle primer in most pistol cases. At the other hand the pistol might be too deep in a rifle case but with the right cases, firing pin and or seating process one could use them. Again not recommended. wtih small primers is easier to exchange as they have compatible dimensions.
Got a goodly stash of large pistol primers and only one pistol to use them in so was thinking of trying them in some very reduced rifle loads. Lyman's cast bullet manual shows several loads for the calibers in mind that stay in the 13,000 - 18,000 CUP range, well under what these could be used for even in magnum handguns. However, I came across a number of threads stating that the use of small rifle (or small pistol magnum) primers in standard pistol cartridges will cause breech face erosion as the lower pressures in these cartridges do not allow the harder rifle primers to adequately flatten and seal the primer pocket.

When I first was loading for 222 and 223, the common wisdom was to use "magnum" primers for ball (335, BLC2) type powders and use "standard" primers for stick (4198, 4895) powders. I used mostly CCI so that meant 400 or 450, with some Federal mixed in (200 or 205). Today, CCI is the only manufacturer that produces a "magnum" small rifle primer.
